Closeup Image of Hawaiian Pizza

Hawaiian pizza, despite its name, did not originate in Hawaii. It commonly consists of the traditional pizza base of tomato and cheese but adds toppings of ham or sausage and pineapple. Other versions of Hawaiian pizza include toppings of green peppers, mushrooms, onions, jalapenos, bacon, or shrimp.

In Australia, this type of pizza enjoys great popularity; 15 percent of pizza sales in that country are Hawaiian pizza. In Italy, Hawaiian pizza is thought to be a variation of Italian cuisine by the Germans.

A co-owner of the Satellite Restaurant in Chatham, Ontario, Sam Panopoulos, claims to have invented Hawaiian pizza in 1962. Panopoulos and his brother, Nick, who were business associates for about 50 years, would capitalize on the success of Hawaiian pizza when they began serving the Hawaiian burger.

Additional modifications of this type of pizza substitute chicken for ham or add black olives or refried beans. Salsa or even barbecue sauce has also been used instead of tomato sauce.
